Stage 5 Ciudad Rodrigo - Gallegos de Argañan
Introduction
And then there is silence again
If you spent the night at the La Concha hostel, the way out of Ciudad Rodrigo is quick, via the old bridge over the Águeda River and Calle Clemente Velasco. As you pass under the highway leading to Portugal, you will find yourself once again surrounded with silence and stunning views of what remains of the meseta and the last livestock farms.
It is necessary to stock up at Arrabal del Puente (or at Ciudad Rodrigo, the night before, if you intend to leave the hostel while it's still dawn), as there are no intermediate villages in this stage, or support facilities. The journey has an added difficulty: there is almost no shade. For that reason, you should start the route as early as possible to avoid the midday sun. If this happens, take advantage of the few trees to rest, especially near the bridge of the Azaba stream, an affluent of the Águeda River.
The rest of the route is very pleasant until the Valdelacruz stream (also known as the Gallegos stream), and then a short climb to Gallegos de Argañan, where the St. James church awaits you.
